A trauma response can result from exposure to any scary or distressing situation. It can show up in the form of high reactivity, bad dreams, upsetting thoughts or memories, difficulty concentrating, or difficulty sleeping. Now, while the word “trauma” is often associated with things like war, disaster or abuse, trauma responses can also result from other experiences like bullying, having a critical caregiver, generational trauma, or even learning something traumatic happened to someone else.
