Therapists Uncut Podcast

Jan 4, 2021

Let’s get 2021 started off right! Learn how to avoid the hype and fad of New Year’s resolutions and utilize preparation, commitment, mindset and other tools to help you not only set, but keep healthy habits all year long!

In this episode we talk about:

2020 was one hell of year, I think we can all agree, and so many people are looking forward to 2021 and that it will bring! While Jolene would much rather prefer a sneak preview...

“I want the sneak preview. I don’t believe the ball should drop until we all get to see the trailer!” - Jolene Daly on ringing in 2021

As we all would, we won't know what the new year will bring until it rolls in.

Why New Year’s Resolutions Suck

Now, for those who are ready to set those New Year’s resolutions, hang tight for this 26-minute episode on why many New Year’s resolutions fail including:

  • Loss of motivation
  • The setting of unrealistic or unreasonable goals (especially if you have the same goal every year but are doing nothing different to get you closer to it, yet expect different results)
  • “All or Nothing” thinking

How to Create Sustainable Healthy Habits

Instead, learn tips on how to set resolutions (or goals) for the year that are actually attainable, and not just for the short term, but for the long run! Resolutions are great to get you motivated, but there are a few things that you can put in place to help you change, create, and sustain healthier long-term habits in the New Year.

Tip 1: Be realistic, avoid All or Nothing thinking or xero to sixty thinking

  • Identify your baseline first, your starting line
  • Set small, achievable goals that gradually work you toward your long term goal

Tip 2: Have an accountability partner to help keep each other on track

Tip 3: Use SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable, Time Based)

Tip 3: Commit to the smaller changes for a more sustainable outcome

“I will say that I am one that when I get an idea or set a goal, I tend to go balls to the wall and blow it. I go hard, then I hurt myself. Then, I have to recover!” - Nikki Young on past New Year's resolutions

Tip 4: Use your personality in terms of the introversion or extroversion scale to determine what can be a reinforcer. Is it socialization when you engage in this habit, or it independently completing an activity or habit in solitude (if you identify more as introvert).

Tip 5: Count your “baby steps” because this is PROGRESS, too! And celebrate them!

Tip 6: “Don’t Shit on Yourself.” Get yourself in the right mindset. Focus on what you have achieved, not what you didn’t do. Listen to what you need to listen to keep you in the right mindset. Focus on

Tip 7: Use Visualization or Vision board to help keep you on track

Tip 8: Reflect on why you are creating or changing these habits in the first place. What’s the purpose?
